The Best of Year Awards and its gala is one of the highlights in the calendars of the architects’ and designers’ community in the US. The event, which took place for the 13th time this year, is organised by the American Interior Design platform once a year. In 2018, the event was held at the Jacob Javits Center’s River Pavilion in New York City on 30 November. Interior Design’s editor-in-chief Cindy Allen and its publisher Carol Cisco were the hosts.
The accolade is awarded in two main categories – projects and products – and numerous sub-categories. Office furniture manufacturer Wilkhahn from Bad Münder in the north of Germany, had two reasons to be pleased: its AT office task chair with patented free-to-move technology was awarded the title of Winner as the best product in the contract seating: task category, beating chairs by international competitors. In addition to its ergonomic, three-dimensional qualities, AT stands apart as a smart all-rounder thanks to its integrative, attractive design.
Almost just as pleasing is that one of Wilkhahn’s most exciting reference projects has won an award in 2018: Rottet Studios and Studios Architecture garnered the Winner award in the office renovation category for its refurbishment – also called after its address on Wall Street – of the New York Stock Exchange. The numerous new conference rooms for the offices. spread over two storeys and covering floor space of around 3,900 sq m, are all furnished with Wilkhahn’s Graph chairs (design: jehs+laub); the boardroom and its re-exposed Beaux-Arts glass ceiling is especially spectacular.
For the medium-sized enterprise, these awards are welcome confirmation that innovative German-made design and quality are appreciated again and again at an international level too.
