Chicago is well known as the cradle of the US architecture scene. This is where the first skyscrapers were constructed, with buildings by architectural giants like Mies van der Rohe, Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright shaping the cityscape. So two years ago it seemed an obvious choice to pick Chicago as the place to host the first architecture biennial in North America and now the second one will be starting in mid-September 2017. Organisers Marc Lee and Sharon Johnston from Los-Angeles-based architecture firm Johnston Marklee came up with the Make New History banner for the event. They believe that the construction history of Chicago and other cities is a valuable resource for current architecture projects.

As a result, the Chicago Cultural Center is the main venue this year. The neoclassical building will accommodate both international architecture firms and contemporary artists such as Berlin’s Veronika Kellndorfer whose work deals with urban architecture. Other venues will include museums and galleries inside and outside the city limits, such as Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House on the banks of the Fox River. Special architecture-related performances are also taking place this year.

The Chicago Architecture Biennial will run until 7 January 2018. More than 100 companies and artists from over 20 countries are exhibiting there.
