Art in a coffee warehouse

29.01.2018 | by Wilkhahn Germany

It’s worth going to see Rotterdam at any time: since the modernist age, the port city has been considered a hub of experimental architecture. The Kunsthal Rotterdam and the comprehensive collection at Boijmans von Beunigen Museum make it an exciting destination for art fans. There’s a particularly interesting programme in February, because ART Rotterdam will be opening its doors in the Van-Nelle Factory from 8 to 11 February 2018 and the show will be accompanied by numerous other events throughout the city. Top Dutch and international galleries will be exhibiting in the building where coffee, tea and tobacco were once produced. The steel and glass building has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since the early 1920s. It will be showing both newcomers and established artists. Wilkhahn is for the fifth time an ART Rotterdam sponsor and right in the midst of everything with its showroom in the Van-Nelle Factory, which today provides office space for architects, designers and media professionals. This year Wilkhahn will also host the ART Rotterdam team in their showroom and will invite architects and final clients to visit this event. To get a free ticket for 2 persons you just have to write a mail to info@wilkhahn.nl and visit the Wilkhahn showroom. Drinks and food are waiting for you.
Wilkhahn also furnished the lunch restaurant at the Van-Nelle Factory in 2016.

The eight-metre-tall Face Freedom sculpture by young artist Anne de Vries welcomes visitors right at the entrance. His fairytale tree is inspired by the world of the internet. An installation by Yair Callender examines the course of the sun and the might of the universe in the open air section curated by Niekolaas Johannes Lekkerkerk.

An exhibition called Commonities is new this year. Renowned curator Lorenzo Benedetti uses it to combine various genres whose themes and materials reveal things in common. The generous-sized area given over to video art is a special feature. Paris-based curator Martha Kirszenbaum’s ART Rotterdam Projections show the latest works by Turner Prize winner Laure Prouvost or Juliet Blightman from the UK in a darkened room some 700 sq m in size.

ART Rotterdam is part of the ART Rotterdam Weekend. A number of art events, including the OBJECT Rotterdam design fair, will take place all over the city. A shuttle bus will take visitors to each of the venues.
